beginning a new role

Tonight I attend my first meeting as a member of BAFTA NY's board.

We meet at The Norwood Club, "a perfectly preserved 1847 mansion," according to its website. This private creative arts club is located on busy West 14th street. But once I enter this quiet, unmarked residence, I feel transported to another time and place.

We meet in a big room, with a large conference table and striking art. Only three of us are new, and we are welcomed with warmth. It's easy to feel part of the group quickly. The agenda is long, and takes over an hour to cover. I'm one of those rare people who doesn't mind meetings. In fact, the one tonight reminds me of how much I've missed being part of something I believe in. I love: discussing strategy, hearing opposing points of view, listening to ideas that are well articulated, diplomatic, and smart. I also love: humorous banter, the business of entertainment, contributing to and building off the views of others. But most of all I love being part of a committed and passionate group.

After the meeting, we go to another floor for cocktails. I drink a glass of red wine, and because I don't drink often, it doesn't take long to feel its loosening effects.

Dinner is served in the same room as our meeting, but the decor and ambiance have been transformed. This is clearly now a place for socializing.  As it's a very long table, I speak mostly with the people nearest me.  And those conversations keep me totally engrossed and entertained.

A board position is for three years. I feel honored to be part of such an illustrious group.
