trapped on an island

I see a news story that grabs my attention.

Diane Cowan, a 54-year old lobster scientist,  lives on Friendship Long Island, a mile off the Maine coast.   One day, Diane goes out and finds that her boat is frozen in. The surrounding waters have succumbed to the negative 17 degree water.  It has now been 32 days that Diane has been iced in. But she remains upbeat and comfortable, with sufficient food and drink. Still, her friends arrange to have some wouldn't it be nice food air-dropped to her.

I watch an interview with Diane.  She is positive and upbeat. Diane is being interviewed via Skype.  Her internet and phone work fine.

I am lying in bed last night about to watch American Crime — the premiere of a new ABC series that has been well reviewed.  And then, boom, no cable.  I try again. Nope; it's not working. I go into the living room.  That TV is also out.

I open my computer. No internet. This is bad. I can much more easily live without TV than without internet.

I pick up my landline phone. Dead.

I live on a much bigger island than Diane does and I feel cut off.

I go to sleep and wake up connected.

I could never be a lobster scientist.
