My conversations with
Alexander are generally short ones. I
ask him questions like, “Did you receive the scarf I sent you?” It takes him days and days to check his mail. “Ya, I think it was there.” “What do you mean you think it was there?” Then he concedes he hasn’t looked yet.
Or, I find a cashmere hat
at Maxwells’s 60% off sale. I ask him to
check the link I send him to see if he wants the hat. I have to ask him at least five times. Either he’s too busy, or he’s just running
out for class (or the gym), or he’s at the mall with a friend, or
something. Really! You’d think I was asking him to physically go
to North Falmouth to look at the scarf.
Or, I ask him to send me
his schedule. This request must be asked
at least a dozen times. It’ll probably
come down to a threat. “I’m not sending
your (whatever) until you send me the schedule.” At least that’s what worked last semester.
But…
If I hear or read
something about nutrition or working out, now that he has time to discuss.
Today Alexander tells me
all about skinny fat. He says that’s
what I am. (Though I'm not so sure about the skinny part. At 128, I still want to lose six pounds; my jeans are starting to feel tight). He even sends me an
article.
When your 20-year old son notices, it's definitely time to do something.
Great article, Lyn!
