My plan for
the day is a simple one. Stay home. Work on resume. Eat little.
But then, my sister
Valerie calls this morning and suggests getting together. We consider and
reject museum options:
The Museum of the City of New York?
Too far north…. no interest in going to upper Manhattan.
The Discovery Spy Exhibit?
Times Square…rather not.
The Museum of Art and Design
International
Center of Photography
NY
Historical Society
None of the exhibits at any of these places sounds compelling.
Next we move
on to movies. The one film we both want
to see, Side Effects, I’ve promised
to see with Zelia tomorrow. So we chose
instead Safe Haven, a new romantic
thriller based on a book by Nicholas Sparks.
The location and time are both convenient (1:30, Upper East Side).
We meet for
lunch at a little restaurant neither of us has ever been to, Alice’s Tea
Cup. It’s a perfect little sandwich and
salad place. In celebration of
Valentine’s Day (or maybe they do this all the time), little girls are given
pink wings that are sprinkled with fairy dust.
An adorable girl with blond curls flies around near our table.
We split two
different sandwiches (one, a mayo-free tuna; the other, a tea-soaked chicken)
that are (regrettably) accompanied with irresistible fries.
The movie is
passable; the food good but not great; the company, perfect. It's a much better day than the one I had planned.
