46 degrees and sunny. Late April, and it's a beautiful winter day.
I put on a pair of cropped
leggings, with a comfy (that is to say, ratty-looking) white T-shirt hiding
under a nice green cashmere sweater. I
decide to walk to the Westside. I have
the perfect coat for this weather…a Moncler lightweight mid-length coat that I
love. I bought it when I exchanged a
year-old pair of boots at Bergdorf’s last fall.
I can see why Moncler is so popular, despite its price. Here's a picture of it in blue; mine is black.
I leave my building; it is
colder and windier than I thought. I
walk a half a block, and return home. I
see the doorman I just said bye to, and think to myself I am such a wimp, and turn back around and leave. Within a block I’m glad I did. The cold air is invigorating.
I get to Madison and stop in
Sean’s, a small men’s clothing store.
Last year I bought an inexpensive cotton scarf there. I try on a few. The store is empty except for one salesman. He is critiquing the various scarves I am
trying on. I take off my coat and
sweater to see the scarves against white, the color I typically wear.
The sales associate says, “I
think it’s hard to get a good feel for the scarf against that ensemble you’re
wearing.” Ensemble? Is he referring to my throw-on-go-for-a-walk
outfit as an ensemble? He is being kind. I tell him so and we both laugh. I leave the store empty-handed but with a new
friend.
By the time I make it across
the Park I think I could have left my coat at home. It feels good to be out walking. I end up at Zabars and buy chicken, and a
7-layer cake I promised myself I wouldn’t buy.
Even a walk across the park can’t justify my purchase, but still; I’m
glad I did (walk, that is).
