a fair-weather friend

So here’s the definition:

A friend who is only a friend when circumstances are
pleasant or profitable.

I have a friend who is a fair-weather friend, but in her case, the definition is more literal:

A friend who will participate in events when weather conditions are
pleasant.

A few days ago Zelia and I talk about seeing a play in Tribeca.  It’s an off-Broadway show called Take Me Back and it's gotten good reviews.  I ask Zelia if she wants to go.  She emails me:

it depends on the weather.... if it is above 32 i will go. i will
look at the forecast

I check and write back:

40 and sunny

Zelia agrees to go.  I buy tickets for $40.

But the weather forecast turns out to be wrong.  At 9:25 this morning Zelia writes:

It is actually freezing. If it doesn't get better I won't go. I have had enough of this weather...it is so uncomfortable. Sorry.

The morning progresses and the sun comes out.  I email Zelia around noon for an update.  She responds:

Can you send me the address? Weather is improving, I will take a look at the commuting conditions and let you know.

I give her the address, 46 Walker, and get this response:

i will go, there is a subway right there

We go and the play is worth much more than the $20 we pay.  We both love it.  And fortunately, the weather stays above 32 degrees.
