a special dinner

Last night my mom says, "Tomorrow, let's go out for a nice dinner."  She suggests The Chart Room because she knows I love baked stuffed lobster and The Chart Room is one of the few restaurants that serve it.  But I say, "How about Bleu's?"  Bleu is a French restaurant in Mashpee Commons that I've never been to, and my mother's only been there for lunch. I call for a reservation, using my iPad to find the number.

I ask for a 6:30 reservation, but all they have is 6:15.  I say that's fine.  Online the restaurant lists duck as one of their entrees.  That's one of our favorite dishes.  I ask if they'll be having duck on Saturday and the woman on the phone says, "I'm sorry, but we recently changed the menu."  I'm a bit disappointed, but that doesn't deter us from deciding to go.  I hang up and my mom says, "That sounds great.  I'm surprised you were able to get a reservation.  They are usually so crowded on a Saturday night."

Tonight we go.  We give our name to the hostess who can't find our reservation.  I recount the whole conversation from the night before.  "Hmmm. That's strange," she says, "because we do have duck on our menu."  The maitre d' comes over and is very nice.  He accepts responsibility for the error and finds us the perfect window table for two.

As we are contemplating the menu, my phone rings.  "Hi.  This is Heather at Sienna.  It's 6:25 and we can only hold your table for another five minutes before we have to give it away, so please let us know if you are coming."  Sienna is another nice restaurant in Mashpee Commons. How did I do that?  Sienna's phone number must have been listed under the one for Bleu, and I called that  number instead.  That's all I can think of.  I feel more than a little stupid, and call Sienna to apologize and explain my mistake.  I don't say anything to the nice people at Bleu.

Our meal is spectacular in every way.  The spinach salad with brie and cranberries, and the duck entree are excellent.  My mom and I never go out alone for a nice dinner.  I'm glad I made the mistake I did; I can't imagine a better evening with my mom.

  1. This was indeed a very special dinner and would have been even if you two had ended up in a diner!
