I grab a beach towel and a
book. Walk less than five minutes. And I’m at John Jay Park, where there are
two large outdoor pools.
Many years ago
I came here, but was discouraged by the abundance of pool rules and the absence
of chairs. But things have changed. The many rules still exist, but now they have
lounge chairs; you are not allowed to bring your own.
I arrive around noon, an
hour after the pool has opened. By then, all the chairs are taken. So I lay my towel down on the concrete. The two pools (one for swimming and one for diving) are remarkably clean. The rules insure it: no food; no drink; no pets; and mandatory showers
before entering the pool area. There are
several uniformed police around to insure no rules are broken.
It is difficult to read,
lying on concrete, and it is impossible to stay comfortable. But within an hour of arriving, a chair opens
up and I grab it. It is not exactly
country club pooling, but it’s not bad. And the location is great.
