up to Cape Cod

I meet Alexander at Eighth and 34th to take the Bolt Bus up to Boston.  Getting to the Cape, without a car, is a major undertaking.  It used to be simple.  We’d take a 3-hour train to Providence, my mom would pick us up there, and we would drive 80 minutes to her home in North Falmouth.  Door to door was under five hours.

But a few things happened.  Busses started running from NY to Boston (and Providence) and charging $25 and less for a ticket (compared to $60 and more for the train).  The busses were filled with normal people and offered wi-fi (sort of; most of the time it doesn’t work).  And, my mom doesn’t like driving anymore to Providence.  In fairness, it’s almost a 4-hour round-trip for her, and she can no longer leave my dad alone at home.

So now, Alexander and I take the bus.  Today, my mom has generously offered to have a driver pick us up in Boston.  Door to door it takes about 6 hours, which is good.  No traffic getting out of Boston helps.

On the way, I ask Alexander to read my blog.  He starts to read my post for yesterday and stops and says, “Mom, really.  Who would be interested in reading this stuff?  Who cares that you cleaned your refrigerator of perishables?  Your life is not that interesting.  It’s not that you’re an astronaut or anything.”

I think he’s right.
