Security has become
essential.  You no longer just walk into
a midtown building.  You need to check
in.  You need to show a photo ID.  You need to be announced.  It’s all part of the post-911 world.
Today I go to a screening
committee meeting for BAFTA at the offices of BBC.  Since I have been here before, I just give my
name.  They find me in their
computer.  No need to show an ID since my
photo is already in their database.  If I
were an imposter, they would know it. The photo they have would give me away.
I feel comforted knowing I
am safe.
The security guard at the
desk takes my name, makes me spell it three times, then says, “I found you.  You’ve been here before.”  Yes, I re-confirm.
He prints out a little slip
of paper with my photo already on it.  I
imagine some emergency where they need to find me by sight.  “Quick, go find her.  Here’s her photo…..”
Yes, I feel so much safer!
