Despite my urging, Alexander
has failed to get a job at school. “I’m
too busy.” Yes, his new work-out
schedule eats up most of his day. It
shows, too, but you’d think that was the reason he was in college.
The money Alexander earned
last summer is about gone. I have urged him (urge is my word, his word for
this same activity would be nag) to
contact his uncle about working this week, but he (unsurprisingly) doesn’t get
around to it until a day or two before coming home. It turns out that the person he’s been
working for is no longer with the company, so there really is nothing for him
to do.
His grandfather nonno
(Eric’s father) owns a company that imports and distributes dried fruits, nuts
and fresh produce. It is in the South
Bronx (not easily accessible by public transportation), and much of the work is
done in the wee hours of the morning when the fish and produce markets open.
Alexander calls his
grandfather (he is very close with Eric’s parents) and by the end of the phone
call, he has a job for the next four days, will begin tomorrow, and will go and
come with nonno who will pick him up.
Alexander plans on going to
bed by ten tonight (it's never before two). He is being picked
up at 4:30 am. This should be
interesting.
