george the tailor

Last year I find George the European Tailor on Yelp.  He did a great job altering a cashmere coat I had, so today I bring him the gown I am wearing to Jason’s wedding in late October.

This small tailoring shop is a tiny storefront on Lexington Avenue. Clothes everywhere fill the cramped space.  But I see impressive labels, and the two customers in the shop when I arrive have beautiful taste, as evidenced by the bags they are carrying and the clothes they’ve brought in.

George is a small man with a gruff manner but knowing hands.  He thinks so too. Unprompted he tells me he is the best tailor "in all of New York."  I like his confidence.

Before I put the gown on, I fear it’s no longer going to fit.  I am the same size as I was when I bought the gown this summer.  Yet still.  I imagine getting ready for the wedding and finding the gown won’t zip.  Or, that the top falls off me.  I have no back-up if either of these fears materializes.

But I step into the gown and aside from the length, it fits perfectly.

I am relying on George’s expertise to hem the dress.  He recommends an inch above the floor saying, “It’s safer this way. You won’t trip and break a leg.”  I don’t disagree.   After all, he is the best tailor in all of New York.  Just ask him.
