two brave hair decisions: part one

Everything lately seems centered on THE wedding.  The wedding isn’t until October 26, but that’s now only seven weeks away.

When is my mom coming back for her final fitting? 

Will my dad be home then or still in rehab?

Where is everyone staying? 

I still need to help my mom find a dress for the dinner the evening before.  

Alexander has chosen his tux but the last fitting is on the day of the wedding.  

Does he have shoes for the dinner? 

Should I bring an extra pair of shoes to the wedding in case mine give out? 

I’d still like to lose about three to five pounds.  I’m okay as is, but a little lighter would be better.

And then there’s the issue of hair. 

My sister will have a hairdresser to help us with the styling, but I still need to think about color and cut and the timing of both.  A good cut (with my expensive but fabulous hair cutter Cedric, at aka Cedric) I’ll get two weeks out.  And color, about three days out.

Right now, my hair is too long.  Cedric last cut it four months ago.  And the grey roots are long past their expiration date.

So as an interim step, I decide to color the roots myself and go for a $25 cheapie hair cut.

Last time I tried to color my roots I nearly destroyed my bathroom.  It was years ago, and I ended up with dark brown stains everywhere.  But products, I’m sure, I’m hoping, have improved since then.

I go to Duane Reade and ponder my options. I even take out my phone to check the reviews.  I consult another woman who is also perusing the aisle.  “Go lighter than you think,” she advises.  “I remember my hair dresser telling me that.”  I listen, and end up buying Nice N’ Easy Root Touch-up in Medium Golden Brown for $9.49 plus tax. (If I like it, I’ll buy more next time at Target where it’s only $5.99).

 Except for the timer, everything is provided.

I follow the simple instructions. 

Put on the rubber gloves provided. 

Pour the contents from a small tube and bottle into the plastic bowl.  Yes, I know, it looks like the output from a small dog.

Mix together.

Apply to roots where I part my hair.  I also add to a few other places. 

Wait 10-15 minutes.  I wait 12.

Rinse (without shampooing) until the water runs clear.

It is so easy.  Takes no time.  Is not messy.  And the color blends perfectly.

The result is, well, not bad.  Enough to buy me a couple of weeks between coloring. I’m totally sold.
