two brave hair decisions: part two

The trying-to-save-money-on-my-hair-strategy-part-two doesn’t work out quite as well as part one did.

I find a hair salon near me on Yelp.  $25 haircuts and the reviews are pretty good.

I get to the salon and remember the name Vivian from Yelp. She is in today and so I request her (later learning that by requesting someone $5 is added to the bill).  Vivian is at Excel’s other salon, a few blocks away.  The sweet receptionist calls her, and then says to me, “If you don’t mind waiting, Vivian can be here in 30 minutes.”  I have a book and my phone, so I say, “Sure; I’ll wait.”

50 minutes later Vivian breathlessly arrives.  She is so apologetic, so diminutive, and so grateful for my patience, I only smile and say, “No problem.”

I explain to Vivian that I only want a trim and to follow exactly the lines of my current cut.  Long layers.  Long bangs.  And don’t take more than ¾ inch off.  Together we decide that ½ inch is too little and a full inch is too much.  Vivian even uses her fingers to pinch ¾ inch of  space to eliminate any doubt of what ¾ inch looks like.

Vivian is meticulous.  She seems to know what she is doing.  She spends 45 minutes on my hair.  I keep saying, “Don’t cut too much.”  She keeps saying, “I’m not.  Less than an inch.”

Yet somehow I end up with short hair.  Exactly what I didn't want.

The cut is good; the length is not.   But Vivian is so nice, I can’t hurt her feelings.  I tell her she’s done a great job, then comfort myself with the knowledge that hair grows.

  2. It looks like she cut close to two inches but you look great. She gave you a wonderful haircut and it was meticulously done...maybe her trying to get symmetry and the layers to fall a certain way and the fact that everyone's hair is so dry at the ends is the reason she cut more. The question is, how does it look today?

  3. Maybe there are some things you shouldn't economize on! I can't cut my own hair, but I do a better job coloring my own hair than my colorist did and for a lot less.
